Who Makes Business with North Korea?

With the aggravation of the North Korea conflict
throughout 2017, the United Nations Security
Council and its member states had increased the
pressure on the isolated regime and its nuclear
weapon program by tightening sanctions. Yet a
complex and elaborated system of hidden trade
relations and money theft allowed the country to
set up a secret economy under the radar of international monitors over many years.
Despite international agreements and following
denials of potential trade relations, official statistics
however reveal ongoing exports of western
States to North Korea.
Based on the Observatory of Economic Complexity
(OEC) - the leading data visualization tool
for international trade data under consideration
of internationally harmonized systems to classify
traded products - the project investigates the
various German brands and products available in
North Korean supermarkets to this point, mainly
by using video- and image based research and
analysis methods.
